• Club Sailing update
Imperial Yacht Club's slipway with five dinghies. Mirror, Xtra, Laser and Laser Two

🌅 As the sun sets on a fantastic day of sailing, we want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us today. Your enthusiasm and spirit made it a memorable day for our club.

We were thrilled to host 28 sailors, with 9 boats gracing our waters. It was wonderful seeing up to 17 people out on the water at any one time, enjoying the good weather and fair breezes. A special shoutout to those who lent a hand, ensuring everything ran smoothly.

Here’s to the great company, perfect weather, and the joy of sailing! Looking forward to many more days like this.

⚓️⛵️ Until next time, keep sailing and stay safe!

I hope that you are all well and safe.

Just a quick note to let you know that we are back at the club on a Sunday for club racing.

    New Members

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Sam Grimmbacher and Lois Cohen who have joined as Junior members and hope to see you regularly at the club. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions. We would love to hear from you.

    Sailing Calendar

With the disruptions to the sailing calendar due to the pandemic, we will be drawing up a revised Club calendar, which we will distribute as soon as possible.

    Training

There has been much interest in our training program. The coaches and I are working on a schedule and hopefully we can get the full training program up and running again by next weekend.

We did however have a fantastic day in False Bay on Saturday, where we had our first training session on the open sea. The conditions were perfect and all the sailors had a good day on the water.

Three Tera’s and 3 Lasers( and one Extra sailor, who forgot his jib at home(I won’t mention names!)) were launched from Long Beach. We launched the RIB from False Bay Yacht Club. All thanks to Simon Thompson who is a member there, who kindly offered to make arrangements for us.

I would also like to thank all those who helped make this happen. Trevor Bartleet, Jose Heitor and Gunther Henshilwood who helped load and tow. It is truly appreciated. Thanks also to those who kept me company on the beach in my roll as “Dolly Guard” Lol!!

We hope to make this a regular part of our race training program.

    Events

IYC was well represented at The Extra Nationals held at Milnerton Aquatic Club on 27-28 February 2021 with 4 club members participating. Well done to all!

And especially to Howard Leoto, Rob Foreman and Arran Graham for taking 1st, 2nd and 3rd positions respectively on Handicap results.

Hobie 14 Provincial Champs were held in Langebaan on the same weekend. Unfortunately, Graham Offord broke a rudder bolt. Hard Luck Graham. I hope you had a good weekend anyway!

Rope World 10th Anniversary Sponsored Regatta

Johan and his team from Rope World have been long supporters of IYC with a sponsored event each year. It is always a great event and a pleasure to sail under the Rope World banner and we’ve had some amazing fun sailing events over the years. We are well aware exams are in full swing, and so we have kept the sailing short and sweet. First race is 9h30 and done and dusted by 12h30. Plenty time to enjoy study and be ready for Monday. In fact, we’re doing you a huge favour and providing a well earned break after all the graft you’re putting in on Friday and Saturday, right!?

    Calvin off to Youth Worlds

Congrats to IYCer Calvin Gibbs for making the South African Youth Worlds team (Laser Radial) and will be heading off to China early December. It’s been a heck of a year and a dream come true. Also a big shout out to the rest of the team, left to right: Asenathi Jim (coach, non travelling), Benji Daniels (420),  Rivaldo Arendse (420), Elsja Dijkstra (420), Michaela Robinson (420), Calvin Gibbs (Laser Radial), Sonja Stock (Laser Radial), Roger Hudson (Head coach), William Crocket (technical advisor, non travelling) and Alex Burger, not in picture (coach). It is incredible to witness the detailed planning and preparation put together by Roger and RaceAhead team. Not only only the water coaching, but also the research (wind conditions, currents, temperature, humidity, etc) and coordination and logistics around fitting in quality sessions between exams. And the engine room behind a lot of this is Lucy de Frietas from the SAS office in KZN who has done an amazing amount of work behind the scenes organising and communicating. There is still about 6 weeks to go before the team leave, head down ~ study and sail!
Fair winds for now, see you all on Sunday. Damian
Amendments to the SAS Constitution have been recommended and there will be a regional engagement for the WC for 9th November 2017, 6pm in the Main Hall at RCYC – Royal Cape Yacht Club
